Usually I just chuckle at the irony, but I got slightly offended a while ago, gimping back from the post office.

The irritant: an apparently clueless young man walking down the street in one of the ubiquitous Che Guevara t-shirts. Even setting aside, for a moment, the ineffable tackiness of making shedloads of money off the image of a dead man--or of supporting people who do--it struck me as annoyingly ludricrous.

Superficial as it may sound, this guy didn't look as if he'd recognise a revolutionary if set upon by one. The overpriced tracksuit bottoms and giant basketball shoes only helped with this impression. Hard to picture him giving up his comfortable lifestyle for any cause. Possibly he thought the shirt was far more directly related to cannabis. Even if I agreed more with the late Dr. Guevara, I do not have the cred to reasonably associate myself with him--much less this example of middle-class Essex young manhood. Maybe it's unfair, but I got a strong impression that he'd be hard pressed to explain the platform of a single contemporary British political party, never mind Guevara's political philosophy.

My sense of humor may really have gone on vacation this afternoon, but at times this sort of thing really bugs the crap out of me--almost as badly as the buffoons who claim to be Jeffersonians, when they've obviously never read what he had to say, and whom old Tom himself would be sorely tempted to horsewhip. Or at least to point and snigger.

I've been keeping busy enough to neglect my mail, even, since I got back from Virginia, but will try to post something less cranky soon. *whistles*

Oh, dear--I didn't mean to ignore you! Things have been pretty hectic here, and I just spotted your comment, sorting through a huge wodge of mail.

Those cosmic coincidences seem to happen rather frequently, but I do believe I remember you from way back when. Rather distinctive name. Mine is less so (was Rachel Brewer) and I kept a rather low profile at the time. I see [livejournal.com profile] nitoda is on your "Friend of" list, as well--the small world of LJ. :)
