Oct. 11th, 2005 02:42 pmUsually I just chuckle at the irony, but I got slightly offended a while ago, gimping back from the post office.
The irritant: an apparently clueless young man walking down the street in one of the ubiquitous Che Guevara t-shirts. Even setting aside, for a moment, the ineffable tackiness of making shedloads of money off the image of a dead man--or of supporting people who do--it struck me as annoyingly ludricrous.
Superficial as it may sound, this guy didn't look as if he'd recognise a revolutionary if set upon by one. The overpriced tracksuit bottoms and giant basketball shoes only helped with this impression. Hard to picture him giving up his comfortable lifestyle for any cause. Possibly he thought the shirt was far more directly related to cannabis. Even if I agreed more with the late Dr. Guevara, I do not have the cred to reasonably associate myself with him--much less this example of middle-class Essex young manhood. Maybe it's unfair, but I got a strong impression that he'd be hard pressed to explain the platform of a single contemporary British political party, never mind Guevara's political philosophy.
My sense of humor may really have gone on vacation this afternoon, but at times this sort of thing really bugs the crap out of me--almost as badly as the buffoons who claim to be Jeffersonians, when they've obviously never read what he had to say, and whom old Tom himself would be sorely tempted to horsewhip. Or at least to point and snigger.
I've been keeping busy enough to neglect my mail, even, since I got back from Virginia, but will try to post something less cranky soon. *whistles*

Date: 2005-10-11 11:01 pm (UTC)the ironic thing about this is that the original designer of the poster never made a penny from it, as he purposely waived his copyright on the image, for rather similar reasons...

Date: 2005-10-17 04:39 am (UTC)I did a search for Saponi and came across your site.
Similarities?lol well, my mom is VA RIGHT NOW (she is from there, and my bro married and moved there) (She married my dad from Canada)
She is from Southside, family has been there 100s of years, and I'm doing some research. Also, my dad's family is from UK. I see you are there. I havent travelled there but would like to at some point. (Could work there through grandparents being fromt here etc.)
Uhm..what else..oh saw ADD..etc etc.
So just thought I'd say hi and say hey "wanna add me" and vice versa?
Actually I don't add lots of people...not to be arrogant...just nice to have similar ground with folks I do add.
:) Thanks!

Date: 2005-10-18 02:51 pm (UTC)Sorry I'm a little late replying--have been down with some kind of virus lately. Just added you to my friends list.
Interesting, a lot of my family moved into SWVA from Southside way way back (thus the Saponi connection--probably joining the Tutelo when things got too hot). I noticed Kate Bush among your interests; I've gotten into her more lately, dipping into my husband's CD collection. Does seem like a number of similarities. :)
Hello!
Date: 2005-10-25 06:32 am (UTC)Anyhow, I found you through LJ's school-listings thingy -- apparently we were in the same PCHS graduating class. And you've also startled me by having my girlfriend

Date: 2005-11-15 01:11 pm (UTC)Those cosmic coincidences seem to happen rather frequently, but I do believe I remember you from way back when. Rather distinctive name. Mine is less so (was Rachel Brewer) and I kept a rather low profile at the time. I see
