Note to anyone who might have considered trying this: hiking out for shopping in relatively untested sandals is not the best plan, even on the basis that "Sainsbury's isn't that far." Ouch, my calf muscles. :/

Lots of documents arrived today--first a FedEx packet from my parents (birth certificates and such are handy), then some awaited proof of residence in the form of what looks to be a council tax statement. Even one addressed to "Ingear" and "Racheal". *shakes head* Yay--besides more things to show the registrar later this week, I now have the documents to open a bank account.

After I tried calling that credit card company again this afternoon, it seems that the problem was an improperly credited payment, rather than anything more nefarious. That should be fun to sort out, but at least the card doesn't need cancelled or anything. Whew.

Waiting for the bus on the way back from the store, a rather batty old lady struck up a conversation with me. This seems to happen frequently, more than would be explained by appearing polite; maybe it's easy to recognise fellow batty old-ladies-to-be. :)

Havering Council aren't the most *stellar* spellers. they used to spell my surname "Mottisham" and how they managed to get it *that* wrong, I know not. I shan't even start on the *utter* and *total* inability of UK institutions to grasp that it is "G. Ingvar Mattsson", rather than anything else (that did end up with me having to re-sit the mortgage-getting process, it did). That was actually semi-amusing. Wholesale mortgage questionnare for the provisional mortgage, then again as I found current place, then again (in panic) when documentation was compared.

"Mottisham", eh? That is a strange phonetic interpretation. Could have been worse; it could have been "Mottesheard", which is how I initially misread it. :)

Erk, redoing the mortage process sounds thrilling. I'm slightly surprised that being able to produce documentation of your full name--combined with the frequent misspelling fun for everyone--wasn't enough.

"Name on mortgage application does not match name on copy of passport"...

My Beloved Bank managed to turn "G. Ingvar" to "Ingvar G." (since they can't cope with anythig but middle initials) and that (of course) shone through on the mortgage application and that, in turn, didn't match my passport. Luckily enough, they *did* manage to just type in most answers off the already-approved application, so it was reduced to answer some 10-odd questions and signing *loads* of papers.
