From the Common Errors in English site, comes something important to remember:

'Gaffe is a French word meaning "embarrassing mistake," and should not be mixed up with "gaff": a large hook.'

This reminds me how much I would enjoy having something like a nice marlin gaff at hand, some days. It might prove useful upon seeing the fifth sign in a row chock-full of strange attempts at punctuation, not to mention its possibilities in dealing with particularly recalcitrant cats (and Sidney).
