Sorry for the terribly late (indirect) reply to your (now-lost) comments.

Both of you were spot on. My mother is the sort who would have been terribly bothered by seeing me hovering around, obviously worried, and she made it clear that she preferred that I get on with things. (She knows I love her and am concerned about her, but I have my own family now, to paraphrase part of our little talk.) It was guilt kicking in that made me wonder if I was doing the right thing in not being there physically, even though I realised there was little I could do beyond some fetching-and-carrying.

Things are looking better now, and I really did appreciate the encouragement and validation when I was feeling low and silly.
