Here is a friend's excellent rant, on a particularly aggravating manifestation of not being taken seriously. I really wish this weren't such a common problem.

Speaking of aggravating, my ISP only just let me reconnect, after periodic tries since before midnight. The second outright network outage in a couple of weeks...grrr. That doesn't even include the night last week that I kept apparently connecting but couldn't even ping anything on their network. The mail server is down at least once a week now, and this is not for maintenance. Before this last bunch bought them out, I had no complaints about the service--it was actually quite good. This is not the best time for them to have sent me a billing statement for another year's service (with increased charges), that's for certain. Even though I'm not expecting to be here much longer, I really should do some ISP shopping. Sid will need it, if nothing else.

Hell, yes! I never got into network security because, well, it doesn't interest me particularly. I never encountered anything quite that bad in network ops but I got several "I want to speak to an engineer, not a receptionist!" comments. Incidentally, I was running the network single-handed at that point.

I must admit to having preferred a female HP-UX suppotr engineer, at one point, due to the simple fact that she provided clueful insight to my problems, whereas the two-three other engineers I tended to end up with didn't (at least not as frequently). Of course, I didn't ask for her until the "current problem" hit a stand-still.
