I haven't gotten much done today; I think I picked up a lousy cold--more likely a touch of the flu, judging from the coughing--on the flight home. Naturally, I tried to convince myself that it was just particularly bad allergies yesterday, but that ceased to work early this morning. Ah well; it may be unpleasant now, but it will be over soon enough. Taking things easy in the meantime seems wise.

I haven't completely followed my self-advice so far as reducing emotional stress today, however. *g* Partially out of a desire to keep my dad happy, since he likes to use this box, and partially because there are a few apps I haven't had much luck getting going under Wine, I decided to install an old copy of Windows 95 which was knocking around the place. (This would be on the partition which held Windows 98, largely for Sid's benefit, before I pulled the cute stunt of doing a rm -r in the wrong directory.)

Installing Win95, even from a flat file, and trying to get it into any semblance of usefulness through added apps, is annoying enough. However, it had been so long since I'd set up DUN that I'd forgotten that TCP/IP is not installed by default, even when DUN is chosen. This led to much "dropping of connection as soon as I dialled in" fun before I finally figured out the problerm--which I had encountered before, leaving me feeling like something of a dunce. Everying is working (for Win95 values of working) now, though.

I think I'll coddle myself with rest and plenty of mint tea and Drixoral before attempting the planned Gentoo install, perhaps tomorrow or the next day. That should be a breeze by comparison, but I'm not overly familiar with their Way of Doing Things, so is likely to take more thought than I can muster soon. Yes, I am a distro-experimentation whore. *g*

Nobody felt like cooking--the other humans seem to be in the early stages of having causht this crud off me--so we just had rather good Chinese takeout from Panda. I went for comforting things I could taste with a stuffy nose: the obligatory spring roll, some tasty dumplings, hot and sour soup, and some Singapore chow fun (mai fun on many other menus, I believe). Yummy as usual, though I haven't dug into the chow fun thus far. Too bad they only do Ma Po tofu at lunch; theirs isn't the best, but satisfying. That reminds me--I should make some myself before long; I used to do so rather frequently. Mmm, hot bean paste.

WineX 3.3 is now running tons of apps that I could never get to work-- it's awesome. Also you might want to try VMWare Workstation so you don't have to actually boot into your Windows partition... virtualization rules, windows is only around when i want it to be.

Thanks for the pointer--I think I'll try moving to WineX 3.3. For some strange reason, I hadn't even considered VMWare Workstation...certainly sounds like a promising solution. Yay for not having to boot into Windows just to do the occasional thing! :)
