Dec. 27th, 2003 07:03 amGardening fever has hit again. I've been poring through the catalogues, and just spent more than I'd intended to on seeds from Johnny's. Not that this was so difficult, with the order including items such as a packet of squash seeds for $4. :) Ah well, I was glad to run across plain old bumpy crookneck yellow squash; they're harder to find than prettified (and generally not as tasty) F1 hybrids. I also picked out a light-green zucchini and a "Cousa" type squash I've wanted to try growing, along with too many other things. (Still a seed catalogue or two to go, and some plants from Richters!) Now, with any luck, the rabbits won't come along and gnaw all the squash plants to the ground again. *g* It could be worse, living very near a large wooded park, actually a glorified finger of the real woods with some poorly-kept trails; so far, the "deer girls" as we call them--the herd we see pretty frequently--have stuck to grazing in the neighbor's big back yard. *knock wood* Maybe the dog's running in and out has helped keep them away. They've gotten surprisingly savvy about heading across a not-very-busy street to reach it--though it is steep and people tend to go at a decent clip--but I was concerned one evening to see a couple of them down by Grove Avenue, with far more traffic.
I am reminded again that I really should sort through the box of seeds. Somehow I doubt that half-envelopes of zinnia seeds packed for 1990, or the hand-labelled mystery envelopes without dates (but at least five years old), would be too useful at this point. Maybe I should consider overplanting a bed with as many as feasible, to feel slightly less heartless. :)
