urocyon: Grey fox crossing a stream (Default)
Today should only pick up from here. I just got back into the house a little while ago. This is generally not a problem at my house, though the dog has jumped up and hit the lock button a time or two. No, on my first morning here, I managed to lock myself out of someone else's house. After changing into ratty shorts (it was stuffy in here and I thought the most important thing I'd be doing was washing some dishes). Of course, I left the keys in my jeans pocket, then went out for a quick smoke. Yet another reason giving up smoking is a Good Thing. :)

My, did I feel swift when I heard the inner door click as I automatically pulled it up behind me. In my defense, I'm not that accustomed to dealing with doors one doesn't have to lock with premeditation ;), but I still couldn't believe it. After some would-be housebreaking reconnaissance--and I do have to suspect that the main reason nobody called the cops was because I looked so ludicrous, creeping around back and climbing up the neighbors' steps over the wall into the back garden--calling a locksmith really did seem like the only decent option. Though I haven't yet had to find out in person, most people probably prefer that houseguests not break windows unless absolutely necessary.

Thankfully, this was not necessary. A nice fellow at HSS Hire Services right across the road was obliging enough to call a couple of different locksmiths for me. (Maybe the "I've just done something really stupid, and I was hoping you could help me" opening line helped.) And one of them came out the most quickly I've seen, and didn't give me any hassle about not actually living here--seeing that I did have keys and probably my luggage spilling all over the place while I was paying him seemed to be good enough. Thank goodness, he didn't seem to charge me beyond coming out (not that he should have when it took all of about two seconds for him to slip the lock, but I've seen them do so, and was relieved). Especially since I had only about 10 UKP more cash at hand than he ended up charging.

Well, that was my late morning, with what passes for excitement.
