New glasses update
May. 27th, 2010 05:21 pmWell, things went better today than I expected with the new glasses. It's still pretty odd, but just about bearable. I wandered around the house without any for at least half an hour this morning, putting off the inevitable. *wry smile*
I wore them for about five hours earlier, and took them off when the blurriness crept back up on the left side. (After several hours' break, I've got them back on now.) It wasn't so bad when I first put them on. The eyestrain was giving me a dull headache, but it hasn't turned stabby so far. My (now very tired) left eye started trying to drift all over the place, and I've been trying not to squint to reduce the blur. I've been noticing a lot of blinking, apparently in hopes that will clear things up a bit.
The most disconcerting thing? It would have probably taken me longer to put my finger on why everything was looking so strange and seeming to move oddly if I hadn't remembered a fairly recent post at Ballastexistenz, on getting new prism lenses. I didn't have double vision, but apparently got used to a lot less in the way of depth and distance perception than I'm getting with the new prescription. The sudden weird 3D effect is probably helping with the dizziness and lurching, and the strangeness of moving my head around much. The effect is even weirder since the right lens is giving me the popping 3D effect, but the left (when the right eye is shut) makes things look flatter than they did before. I feel pretty lopsided, and it's probably giving the old visual processing a fit trying to turn that contrast into some kind of consistent binocular view. Temporarily, closing my eyes helps with that, though I've also got a stiff neck from trying to keep my head immobile earlier. :/
Part of the problem right after I got them was quickly taking them off again, I think. Today, taking them off was if anything a worse adjustment than putting them on. The sudden urge to throw up and stabbing sensations were kind of surprising. That improved in about half an hour, and the eye muscle fatigue was better after a couple of hours.
We'll just have to see how this works out, over the next few days. With any luck, it is a matter of adjustment. If it doesn't improve within a few days, I'm going back and not letting them brush me off without checking the lenses against the prescription and making sure they're centered properly!
Max was rather funny in an annoying way earlier. I usually leave my cane by the door, partly because it's messy in here and I keep snagging the cane on stuff. Plus, I don't usually need it other than for walking longer distances without walls to touch in a pinch. Today, I grabbed it anyway, my balance was so far off--and Max assumed I was wanting to take him out for a walk. :) He just couldn't understand why I wasn't getting my shoes and his leash. So he started nosing at both in his usual subtle way, and running back and forth between the patio door and the back gate. Our Maxie is very subtle! I felt kind of bad, since he really wanted some exercise, and I was so not going to lurch around the park with Mr. Pully Bully this afternoon.
