urocyon: Grey fox crossing a stream (Default)

This morning, I had an interview at Iceland across the street. I'd thought it was a good sign when I took my CV over there, as requested, and just after enough time for the manager to scan it, he pursued me down the aisle with an application form. Good thing I needed to pick up some onions, rather than dashing straight off. It seems I was right to be encouraged.

Of course, I was convinced that I'd completely blown the interview. I was nervous, and my mind goes blank when I'm feeling on the spot. On the way home, I couldn't even control the verbal stimming on the street. Knowing what's going on helps quite a bit, so I don't just feel like an absolute nutball anymore; it hasn't been bothering me much in private lately. Still, I do feel a tad conspicuous, gabbling at myself while walking down the street. At least these days people probably assume I'm on the phone.

Just a few minutes ago, I got a call back. I wound up getting a different position than I expected going in: being in charge of the chilled food section. That means starting with morning hours rather than afternoon, which doesn't fit my circadian rhythm as well--but, almost outweighing that, it doesn't require dealing with customers much. I can actually do customer service with fairly good results, but it is stressful. Dealing with sausage inventory is more my speed these days. (Which may not have been too hard for them to figure out.)

I'm supposed to go back in this afternoon to take care of paperwork, and the induction is next Thursday to start the following Monday. They should be giving me an offer letter today, as well, which I can use as evidence to get my NI number.

So, yay, I'm almost gainfully employed. It may be a touch of underemployment, but that's definitely better than none at all. And it's my first job for an actual employer (as opposed to my old pet care business) in 10 years.

Ah yes, later this afternoon I should be able to slap the second coat of Water Seal on the wooden pond surround, which means it should be ready to assemble and set up tomorrow. Thank goodness for a few dry days! The plants will probably be glad to get potted up, and out of the bucket they've been living in for a few days. I'd definitely recommend Paul Bromfield Aquatics to anyone needing pond plants in the U.K. They have a lot of native plants and good service, and the plants' quality favorably impressed me. After the plants are in, and the filter going, we're going to let it sit a week to make sure water quality is at least semi-stable. Next weekend, then, the Mini Fiends should be able to go in. Some of the biomedia from the big Fiends' tank can go into the filter then, since the filter bacteria are likely to die in a week without fishy waste to digest.

Thanks. I expect it won't be too obnoxious, at least.
