Jan. 28th, 2007 08:24 pmIt's been a lazy day. This afternoon we decided to forgo our usual (excellent) Chinese buffet down the street, and headed to Chennai Dosa for lunch, on recommendation. It was very tasty indeed, and cost less than £11 for both of us, including drinks.
They have both veg-only and nonveg locations a couple of doors apart; we wound up in the nonveg one, since it was marginally closer and we weren't bothered either way. Apparently the veggie one is where they have their buffet, though--as we noticed after being seated--so we ordered à la carte. The service was better than I'd been led to expect--a bit hovery, if anything. Two waiters and the counterman intercepted me when I got turned around and tried to stroll into the kitchen, rather than back upstairs to where we were seated. Their upstairs seating expansion was a tad crowded, and more than a little confusing, but not otherwise unpleasant. :) Not sure how the portion sizes were, we ordered light to begin with, and wound up waddling out. We split a Chilli Paneer for a starter, and went on to a Ghee Masala Dosa and a Special Masala Dosa, with a portion of lemon rice on the side. I wound up with the Ghee Masala Dosa, since the filling was a bit heavy on coriander for
vatine. The dosas were very fresh (I'd hope so, as the specialty), and served with plenty of condiments and rather good sambar. I really like lemon rice, and theirs wasn't disappointing. Come time to leave, we didn't even want any kulfi!
Mmm, good South Indian.
Trying to spot a newsagents on our side of the street afterward, still in Manor Park, we spotted an aquatic shop, and I couldn't resist going in. Yes, this could probably be considered a perseveration. I had "just" planned to have a look around--and did spot some fairly cool sundries, which might be worth another look at some point--but brought home a betta. It wasn't too bad a bus ride home, and I tried to keep him from getting sloshed around too much or chilled. I think he looks like a Bert, and he's starting to settle into his new tank. It did get a tight-fitting mesh lid yesterday afternoon/evening, so he should have trouble jumping out, as his predecessor in that tank did. *knocks wood*
