urocyon: Grey fox crossing a stream (Default)
[personal profile] urocyon
The past few days I've been in what passes for domestic overdrive for me: doing multiple loads of laundry, finishing giving the kitchen a reasonably thorough cleaning (including mopping, joy of joys), tackling the fungus farm the shower swiftly becomes, mixing up a few nontoxic cleaning and gardening products, and trekking around in search of groceries and other household goods in an extreme fit of comparison shopping (I just discovered Lidl, hurrah hurrah!), etc.

I suspect this recent spate of activity has served to keep me distracted, the way things have felt like they've been piling up. But I have found, rather to my surprise, that the house(not-quite)wife role has suited me pretty well since I've been here. Particularly as a transition, I suspect--a reasonable way to settle into getting more accomplished and living a more "normal" life, after several years of being in a sorry shape indeed, and a couple more of being slightly healthier but in a holding pattern. Now I am doing things around here every day, it's a rare day that I don't go out for some reason or another, and I have been feeling good. Not just good, but happy--and the truly happy days were few and far between for many a year there.

That ran away from me a bit, but I am glad to be feeling better and holding up better under stress. :)

In slightly related news, I found a dress for the wedding yesterday. Having decided that having one made wasn't worth the stress at this late a date--particularly without having the pattern I'd already chosen, fabric, or a seamstress for certain--I went out browsing, just to see what might be out there, ready-made. Far from ideal, but it saves tons of hassle. Yesterday's was just supposed to be a very preliminary reconnaissance run, but I ran across something I liked. Very simple and classic style--definitely not from any sort of bridal shop/department--and a lovely fit. It's not terribly formal, but with the right accessories, should be perfect. I've already decided to use some silver and wampum (a.k.a. roanoke, oddly appropriate ;)) jewelry similar to that offered by a Meherrin guy, Andrew Hunter. I was going to buy some of his, but found some other (can't locate the URL atm) made by a Lumbee family firm, which was at least as attractive and less expensive for what I wanted. I am only trusting my family to hand-deliver the jewelry when they come for the wedding, since anything sent by post from the U.S. to me here has vanished into a black hole, thus far--not to mention Ingvar's wallet via Global Priority. *shakes head* Other delivery options tend to be prohibitively expensive, if more reliable.

At any rate, the dress located and purchased is one less thing on the pile.

Coming soon, with any luck (time permitting, mainly): some more interesting content. ;)
