Someone just pointed this out on a forum:

Check-in times to US may hit five hours

Making a vaguely-planned trip back to Virginia sooner rather than later looks like it might be a good idea. Another poster was considering flying into Mexico instead when she goes to visit family in June, reminding me of [livejournal.com profile] vatine's earlier Canada suggestion. :)

Particularly cute:
"Information being obtained includes details about which passengers have requested kosher or halal meals."

Erm, beyond the obvious absurdity factor, this would include a decent number of people hoping for vaguely edible airline food--rather old advice. I've gone for Kosher dairy, myself, though BA's Asian veggie option has been the best so far, enough so that several other passengers were hungrily eyeing my fruit.

And all it does is confirm our intention of not visiting the US anytime in the foreseeable future. Many people I've spoken to have the same reaction everytime something new is added to the US bogeyman list.

Unfortunately, small things like "visit in-laws-to-be" requires either shipping iltb around or entering the US, so there isn't much choice.

I suspect it's all mainly scaremongering. When I flew back to the US soon after 9/11/01 I was told to check in atleast 3 hours early. I got there 3 hours before and the check-in desk didn't even open for another hour. And they could easily enough collect this information before you even arrive at the airport anyway.
