Rather obviously, I'm not in the air.
The events leading up to this were rather strange.
I checked in for the leg of the flight from Roanoke to Philadelphia, went up an escalator, cleared security, and got in the very short line at Gate 5 (of six). The sign was still flashing "5:40, Philadelphia" as I stood there. The lady at the counter called for "Rachel McGraw", so I went to the front. After I showed her the boarding pass, she informed me that she thought it was too late for me to board, but called down to make sure. Apparently, the puddlejumper was already starting to leave--my parents had been waiting beyond security, and watched it taxi off after seeing my luggage loaded (at a close enough distance to recognise it), along with another batch after the one it was in. This was at about 5:30 p.m., and who's ever heard of a flight leaving early?
None of us heard so much as a boarding announcement. Checking in at Roanoke less than an hour before a flight is supposed to leave does not tend to be a problem, as small as the airport is.
Nobody with the airline knew what was going on. I was sent back down to the US Airways counter, and all of the employees who'd been there when I checked in were flabbergasted. The pleasant older man who'd checked me in was amazed to see me back down there, and was extremely helpful in trying to sort things out.
They booked me on the same flights tomorrow. I also had a choice of leaving this evening for Charlotte (NC), going to Dulles from there, spending all night at Dulles, and leaving for Gatwick from there in the morning. This option wasn't too satisfactory, so they issued new (and free) tickets for the flights tomorrow.
I found out when we were leaving that my mother had learned that the "Delayed" flight from Charlotte into Roanoke was actually experiencing mechanical problems, and was already 30 minutes late at that point but due soon. Flights from Charlotte should take an hour or so. The airline people seemed pretty agitated about that situation. She suspected that perhaps they were trying to clear the runways, just in case something unfortunate happened when it landed. That could explain the premature departure of my flight.
I called
vatine about it as soon as I got home, waking him up, unfortunately. It seemed better than waiting for morning there, before he would have set off for Gatwick.
Now I have to wonder where my checked luggage will wind up, and when. *sigh*
