After fruitless searching for the couple of extra copies of my birth certificate I've been keeping around, just because they do occasionally come in handy for this sort of thing, I finally gave in and ordered another from West Virginia Vital Registration. The last time I had to order copies--when getting the new passport--they arrived in well under two weeks, but I don't trust their cautious time estimates. Besides, it's worth the little bit extra to order online and supposedly receive expedited service.

In direct contrast to most I've dealt with in state government in Richmond, at least people have been unfailingly polite to me when I've called Charleston. Actually, I wound up sending an e-mail Friday, and got a very swift and courteous response from some guy in Vital Registration. I did feel like a bit of a dunderhead, interpreting the requirement of "a copy of your birth certificate signed, dated, and sealed" as likely sealed in an envelope so that nobody could accuse one of tampering with it, but the man was very nice in explaining that it was just the usual embossed state seal. (So I'm used to seeing that referred to as a "certified" copy...)

Now I need to remember to run by the municipal building and pick up at least one certified copy of my name change order, since the extras of those were with the birth certificates. They probably still are, wherever Sid moved them. *sigh*
