urocyon: Grey fox crossing a stream (Default)
[personal profile] urocyon
Taking a bite of chuck roast (purchased yesterday) and finding that, indeed, it--and not your virus-addled sense of smell while you were searing it--is off can be disconcerting. Particularly when you've been looking forward to the pot of vegetables cooked in broth. Naturally, my dad went ahead and ate a huge portion of it. *shrug* He'll likely be fine. He consumes far more amazing things than that on a fairly regular basis, and I only recall his getting sick once ca. 1985, from eggnog left out overnight. Though not very kind, comparisons of the man's feeding habits to that of an alligator aren't completely out of line.

Oh yes, I ran across an article* that finally explained what the things I'd spotted all over the place (particularly up and down Wolf Creek in Bland Co. and on Little River out in Floyd Co.) are: old fish weirs. I'd always wondered--some are silted up so that they look almost natural, but others clearly do not--but, for some reason, never asked anyone about them. So, of course, I mentioned this to my mother, and she knew what they were. Makes me wonder how many other questions I've neglected.

* Any volunteers to go wading in the Banister River? Erk. Truly nasty case of summer murk there.
