Dumb as a bag of hammers
Dec. 12th, 2003 01:34 amI just did something so mindnumbingly stupid, I still cannot believe it. Out of convenience, I was doing excessive moving-around and deleting of files while logged in as root. You can probably guess what happened: I got horribly careless and managed to use a good old unmodified rm -r * in the wrong place. Then actually sat there and wondered why find wasn't turning up other directories I wanted to clear out, for a good half-minute at least!
It could have been worse; that partition only had not-terribly-crucial stuff on it--basically the equivalent of a storage shed. I did lose my MP3/OGG collection, though; guess I'll have to start ripping again. Though I've known better for umpteen years now, I am terrible about making backups, and do not have any backup of some of that stuff since the drive I was using for backups crashed. Some of the more important things are backed up, but too rarely. I should just reform my wicked ways and cough up for some sort of decent backup medium.
I certainly know better than to go doing things like that in the first place. Very frustrating.
