It was a pretty rough weekend, what with working myself into the ground to distract myself from the birthday. (Usually the roughest day of the year.) But, I'm here and taking it easy today.

I'm also tentatively encouraged that hitting the B vitamins hard is actually starting to help, since I seemed to have more energy to work off. I'm also not noticing the probably-Wernicke's eye movement weirdness as much; thank goodness I caught this before the Korsakoff bit kicked in! It's also good to find out why I've lost so much muscle mass/strength in spite of efforts to the contrary, and am getting worse orthostatic hypotension, among other things. Looking at prognosis, the eye weirdness is likely to get better, though ataxia only improves in 40% with treatment. Yep, this is still looking pretty frightening!

Yesterday, I felt slightly absurd washing down my beans and brown rice lunch (smothered in nutritional yeast flakes)--and Magnesium-OK tablet--with diluted strange-but-tasty multivitamin juice blend. But, needs must.

Since thiamine deficiency directly messes with glucose metabolism, I do have to wonder if that might have been making my blood sugar control much worse, thus making the kidneys overfilter more thiamine and worsening the deficiency, in another vicious cycle. If so, I wasn't able to find any relevant research with some quick searching.

We do have the new stove now. It's sitting right outside the kitchen. :/

The delivery guys were supposed to haul the old one away, but claimed (with no warning in advance) that they couldn't disconnect it. I was very tempted indeed to pull it out and disconnect it while they were hauling in the new one, with a "Gee, looks like it is disconnected after all!"--which is probably about what they were expecting. Since we're not CORGI certified (still can't stop picturing those little paws, and would much rather deal with a repair dog!), and potentially have liability there, Ingvar didn't want to do that. When he called the delivery place, he got brushed off with a "we can install, but our insurance will not cover disconnection" excuse (probably meaning that they did not send out anybody certified to do either one!). Apparently, we are supposed to get the old one disconnected and call them again to come and get it. Sainsbury's wouldn't answer any questions about what service was supposed to be included. Grr.

I am still horribly tempted to do it myself, but can see Ingvar's point. He's going to call British Gas HomeCare again, to try to get them to send somebody out to do the disconnection/installation, since they couldn't wouldn't fix it. I suspect we're just going to have to get after Sainsbury's Online, since AFAICT that was supposed to be included--otherwise we wouldn't have bought from them! Ah, the continuing fun of home ownership.

It's an extra-good thing I did go ahead and pick up a crock pot on sale after Christmas. I'd been wanting to get one for a while. It sure has come in handy since we don't have a working stove. The first few nights, we got food in, but now I'm getting reacquainted with microwave and crock pot cooking. Yesterday I put in a garlic-lemon-rosemary-smoked paprika chicken, which was delicious! I'm also glad I found out how to get rice to turn out decent in the microwave, without foaming all over the place: don't cover it at all, even with a steam vent. Tonight we're having crock pot red beans and microwave rice.

If we don't get the stove in within a couple of days, I'm still tempted to pick up a hot plate. :/

I'm also glad that, since I've been off the metformin, I can eat moderate amounts of rice without getting sick! Low-carb eating is also less necessary with the Januvia, as moderate carb intake does not send my blood sugar through the roof anymore. Maybe I can even stop eating so much meat now, with all the attached ethical quandaries. For a while there, I had very little choice in the matter, since I need a lot of protein and even much in the way of legumes was making me sick.

Guy will be arriving Thursday to do the install and haul the old cooker away. I will double-check taht I can work from home but I don't think it'll be a problem, otherwise I'll just take the day off.

Remind me to relate the whole tale of woe when I get home... A rough inkling can ble gleaned from this post.
